The Book of Secrets

Unlocking the Hidden Dimensions of Your Life

Lose Weight with The Book of Secrets
Review by Mariana Bozesan

If you ever wanted how to unleash the hidden dimensions of your life to achieve anything you ever wanted, including the ideal weight, reading Deepak Chopra’s latest book, The Book of Secrets will help you achieve that.

The author of more than 40 books, 100 tapes, CDs and videos, Dr. Chopra is one of the world's greatest leaders in the field of mindbody medicine. Through his latest book, Dr. Chopra continues to challenge the perception of the meaning of the mindbody health in our society by offering new and more empowering tools to access our innate healing powers in all areas of life, including the physical, emotional and spiritual. In the words of Ken Wilber, one of the endorsers of this book (back cover): "The Book of Secrets is the finest and most profound of Deepak Chopra’s books to date. Want the answers to the secrets to life? Let me recommend that you start right here."

Formerly the Chief of Staff at Boston Regional Medical Center, Dr. Chopra built a successful endocrinology practice in Boston in the 1980's. He taught medicine at Tufts University and Boston University School of Medicine before he created a mindbody model that honors the fundamental principle that perfect health is more than just the absence of disease.

Dr. Chopra envisions a society based upon the premise that health is a lively state of balance and is based on the integration of body, mind and spirit. His latest book unifies these principles and is one of his most important books, both to date, but also to him personally, as he revealed to me in a recent conversation. In this work, Dr. Chopra dives deeply into the meaning of life, and especially death, as he reflects upon the sudden and recent death of his own father, the famous personal physician of the last governor-general of India, Lord Mountbatten.

In this book, Dr. Chopra says that our "greatest hunger in life is not for food, money, success, status, security, sex or even love" (p.1). Chopra goes on to emphasize that we can all find the "hidden dimensions" of our lives including its secrets in the moment we decide to transform ourselves by "turning fear, doubt, insecurity, hatred and emptiness into their opposites." In our world we seem to stress the importance of the Higher Brain and its ability to analyze and to create new ideas, while we disregard our feelings and emotions which reside in our old brain. The result is much suffering as well as a lack of fulfillment and happiness in life. Dr. Chopra shows how we can become whole again by acknowledging the fact that we are a "creature who acts, thinks and feels" and that "spirituality fuses these three into a single reality." He says that we can connect with the source of the universe through "the one reality," which "can be recognized because once you are there, you experience the flow of life without obstacles or resistance." (p.3). The reader learns that in that state everything in life becomes effortless and all of our desires can be fulfilled.

In the following 261 pages, Dr. Chopra shares 15 secrets, which can help humanity achieve that unity with the ultimate reality of life. For instance, Secret #1 is "the mystery of life is real." Deepak says that we always know who we are and what our meaning in life is. He shows us the way to our higher purpose by taking us through a series of exercises which enables our "body’s wisdom" to "point the way." (p.13). Through Secret #2 ("the world is in you") Dr. Chopra encourages us to "live like a cell" in a human body. In order to be in total harmony with life itself we need to realize, he says, that our world is a direct reflection of ourselves, that we are part of each other’s lives and that there is no need to control anything for all is in total harmony. Dr. Chopra continues to take the reader deeper into the mysteries of life by disclosing that "the cause of suffering is unreality" (p.65), that "every life is spiritual" (p.101) and that "evil is not our enemy" (p.23) but our savior. After sharing the last secret (#15) that "everything is pure essence" (p.251) Dr. Chopra closes his extraordinary book by giving answers to ancient questions such as "Who am I?", "Where did I come from?" and "Why am I here?"

This book is very well written and easy to understand. The author addresses everybody who is interested in personal growth and reaching higher levels of consciousness. The text is accompanied by exercises which are well explained and easy to follow.

The Book of Secrets has been written by a true master. Dr. Chopra’s interesting and inspiring style makes the reading of this book a delight and a "page turner." Each page contains several golden nuggets of wisdom which enables the reader to learn something every time he or she picks up the book to read. The only weakness of this book is that we have to do the exercises ourselves in order for them to work for us.

This work is a must for everyone who wants to learn how to live a life of meaning and to grow personally. Through this work, Dr. Chopra has opened and shared with us his own book of secrets. These are the secrets of a sage who walks his talk. For all those who are looking for a fast track to enlightenment, this is the best book ever written.
