Like many doctors these days, Ellen Cutler, M.D. frequently sees patients who are dealing with overweight and obesity. But
unlike many doctors, she is convinced that the frequently overlooked area of the human digestive system is and
essential component of understanding and treating weight related problems. Poor digestion of food, says Dr. Cutler, is directly responsible for a whole range of weight related problems, from simple excess pounds to chronic overeating.
Under optimal conditions, she explains, the human body is capable of producing the necessary enzymes to digest our food and absorb all its nutrients. However, much of the industrialized world now lives almost entirely on
processed food, which is devoid of the natural enzymes that help us to digest. As a result, the body can’t get the necessary nutrients from its food—a condition that causes powerful food cravings.
And because our body isn’t getting the necessary enzymes from food, it begins to borrow them from its own metabolic system. As a result, our immune system, bloodstream and several other areas of the body begin to suffer. This is what is generally known as aging.
Dr. Cutler sees premature aging as an all too common problem, particularly when it can be easily avoided. For not only do many of her patients experience weight loss through the simple addition of enzymes to their diets, they also tend to see drastic improvements in other areas including improved energy and mood, plus diminished PMS and even fewer wrinkles!
How Can We Add Enzymes to our Diets?
Dr. Cutler points out that natural enzymes exist in all raw, unprocessed foods such as fruits and vegetables, and she advises eating more raw foods and chewing them thoroughly as the first step toward better digestion and weight loss. She also recommends buying organic foods whenever possible. This not only restores essential enzymes to our digestive systems, but helps to replace valuable nutrients in our bodies, which helps us to fight food cravings.
Enzyme supplements can also help greatly with digestion, but Dr. Cutler warns that many brands on the market contain chemicals and fillers, which can cause allergies
2. She recommends seeking out enzymes that are hypoallergenic, with no fillers and encapsulating aids, as with the brand that she created especially for her patients. Additionally, they should contain a full spectrum of digestive enzymes that act on all types of food. Dr. Cutler suggests three different types:
- General digestive enzymes: provide a blend of up to 18 different enzymes to aid in digesting every component of food. Taking one or more capsule with every meal or snack can enhance digestion and help release all food’s nutrients into the body.
- Protease: provides a blend of enzymes that provides support for inflammatory syndromes, detoxification, hormonal imbalance and supports overall healing. Taking one capsule once or twice a day on an empty stomach can support recovery and healing from these types of disorders.
- Probiotic: contain a collection of friendly bacteria including acidophilus, plantarum, bifidum, salivarius and lactobacillus casei. Taking one capsule once or twice a day between meals on an empty stomach maintains and restores the delicate balance of bacteria necessary for a healthy digestive system. Priobiotics can help boost the immune system, prevent allergies, and lessen the effects of lactose intolerance.
So not only can these enzymes help us with digesting our food and losing weight, Dr. Cutler notes that as we begin eating more raw, enzyme-rich foods, we will get that gorgeous, vibrant glow that is one of those
unmistakable hallmarks of good health. And as the pounds drop away, we will begin to feel—some of us perhaps for the very first time—the deep, satisfied feeling of receiving
full nourishment and energy from our food. Can you see why she’s passionate about spreading the word? Dr. Cutler has seen first hand how enzymes can act as a
powerful tool in our journey toward health and vitality.
