How Deep Are Your Security Wounds?

Do you live in hell or heaven?

by Mariana Bozesan

We often believe that money gives us more security, but talking about money brings one of two reactions in people: (a) either it is very positive and they get really excited about it wanting to discuss ways to improve their financial situation, or (b) the opposite is the case and they would rather talk about their sexual lives than their finances. Many people hate it, find it evil, suspect, and want to avoid the topic at all cost, which of course, often shows up in their lives as poverty and lack of sense of security and economic success.

One day, a frightening looking samurai went to a humble monk and said to him in a voice accustomed to instant obedience, “Teach me about heaven and hell!” The monk replied with an attitude of utter contempt “Look at you! How could I teach you anything? You are an embarrassment to any human being let alone any samurai. You are disrespectful, you are aggressive, you are ignorant, and you stink. Get out of my sight, I can’t stand you.”
The samurai turned pale with anger, pulled his sword, and was about to slay the monk when he saw in his kind eyes his endless compassion.
The monk said kindly “That’s hell.”
The samurai dropped his sword at once and dropped down on his knees. He realized that the monk had risked his life to teach him the requested lesson. Tears of gratitude began running down his cheeks.
The monk said gently, “That’s heaven.”
The samurais are long gone. However, do we behave differently when we feel threatened? Modern scientists and brain researchers such as Bruce Lipton, Mario Beauregard, and Andrew Newberg confirm that most of us we are still driven by our reptilian brains when we feel insecure regardless of our cultural or social environment. Like the samurai above, we “pull our swords” immediately and are ready to slay our adversaries unless we have moved to higher levels of consciousness where we realize that our lives are rarely truly threatened.
Yet, what gives us a sense of security?
