2009 Conference on Ethics in Business – Corporate Culture & Spirituality

During the 6th Symposium on Leadership in Business and Spirituality in Brussels, I had the opportunity to present my research on the Making of Consciousness Leaders in a poster session.

"Shaping a sustainable future! Can we overcome the crisis through a focus on human values and ethics? 
 
The ongoing economic crisis has highlighted the challenge of establishing stability and growth in the face of global 
recession. It has also brought into focus the critical importance of the human dimension in leadership styles and 
strategies. In the turbulent and globalized corporate environment of increased complexity and speed, traditional 
governance styles based on unrestricted risk‐ and profit‐taking in corporate boardrooms seem to be giving way to 
new approaches that are more responsive to broader societal interests. 
 
While the risks involved in corporate decision making are increasing constantly, the economic crisis appears to be 
pointing to leadership techniques that improve on the traditional ways of doing business.  
 
Perhaps the world of business and the world of human values are no longer two separate worlds. Emphasizing 
human values may no longer be less competitive. Even with increased competition in business, there are very 
compelling reasons why ethics should not be compromised, and why ethics could in fact be a prerequisite for 
profitability. 
 
This year’s conference is a post economic‐crash re‐evaluation of what is important for stability, harmony and 
justice in the manufacturing, banking, trading and intellectual world.  
 
The conference will examine the measures needed to shape a sustainable future. Is the focus on human values and 
ethics an indispensable key to overcoming the crisis? Or is there no space for such an approach? What lessons can be 
learned from the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, and what is the leadership style that can pave the 
way for a sustainable future?"
